Cassette-based DX systems get new technology

Looking for a new CR system and aren't sure which vendor to choose? ECRI (Plymouth Meeting, Pa) has evaluated the use of cassette-based digital X-ray (DX) systems and is offering ratings of one cassette-based DX system, descriptions of new product offerings from four previously rated suppliers, and an overview of new CR technologies—all based on the evaluations.

The test results and ratings for one CR system focus on the quality of the images produced, throughput speed, redundancy, and increased efficiency of the radiology department. ECRI identifies key advantages related to both image quality and cost. Also, the company offers new product offerings from the suppliers of previously evaluated CR systems: Agfa HealthCare (Ridgefield Park, NJ), FUJIFILM Medical Systems USA (Stamford, Conn), Eastman Kodak Co (Rochester, NY), and Philips Medical Systems (Andover, Mass). Purchasing guidance on the new CR technology developments also is offered.

"The most significant finding is that image quality is improving due to modifications made to the underlying technology," said Jason Launders, MSc, senior project officer and medical physicist of the Health Devices Group at ECRI. "One of the reasons why CR has taken so long to become widely accepted is inferior image quality compared to traditional X-ray film. In this study, we found that the image quality available in cassette-based digital detectors is improving. Other digital technologies used in radiography already have improved image quality, but these are generally only available in fixed-imaging systems that lack the flexibility of the cassettes."

The evaluations were highlighted in a recent edition of Health Devices and can be purchased by visiting www.ecri.org/marketingdocs/HDNov05FXBACK.pdf. For more information on capturing images with digital technology, don't miss "Taking X-Rays in the Digital Age: A Primer".
