Ready or Not, Here It Comes

by Andi Lucas

It's hard to believe that I'm about to embark on my third RSNA (aka the meeting of the Radiological Society of North America that takes place every year immediately after Thanksgiving in Chicago). Seeing as 2005 marks the 91st meeting, my third voyage probably isn't a huge deal. But it is to me!

As overwhelming as the show can be for attendees, exhibitors, presenters, and RSNA staffers alike, it truly is the best and most exciting place for innovation in our industry. Attendees are able to see these products and technologies in action, adding a whole new dimension to their understanding of the entire radiology picture.

I must admit that I have a few favorite aspects of RSNA. First, I love to see vendors' works in progress (WIPs), and I encourage you to do the same. These systems are the breakthroughs that are on the verge of being released but just need a few more tweaks—and that all-important clearance from the FDA. Many exhibits have entire areas dedicated to WIPs, and it really is a fascinating look at the near future.

Also, I love the chance to finally meet some of the vendors and put faces to the names with whom I work each day. In fact, networking is probably on the top of many attendees' lists of RSNA benefits. I also truly enjoy meeting many of you, the readers of Medical Imaging, as well. Once again, we'll be available for questions and to distribute the magazine from Booth 2616 in South Hall, so please stop by as you're perusing the exhibits.

And with more than 700 exhibitors filling the North and South halls of McCormick Place, preparation is absolutely key, which Michael Mack discusses in this month's "Informatics Report". To help prepare you for the countless products, technologies, and services that will be showcased, we've compiled our annual RSNA Preview.

First, we chatted with a handful of exhibitors to find out their expectations for this year's event, and the responses run the gamut—such as checking out the competition. Next, we compiled a preview of the exhibits, which includes information about the offerings to be showcased by more than 130 companies. Then, we talked with RSNA staff members to highlight what's new at the show this year, especially those aspects that will better the attendee experience. Finally, for the second year in a row, we interviewed concierges at top Chicago hotels to gather a list of the best dining options during the show in "Time To Eat!." We even included a section on the top places to find that delicious Chicago-style pizza!

Hopefully, all of our preshow work will lead to a successful event for all of you (and me). Try to forget the foot pain and long hours; instead, focus on the wonderful showcase of innovation provided at RSNA. I plan to do the same.
